One of the most common questions I get is: “How do you do it?”
Normally my answer is one of two things… “Very Carefully” or “Lots of Practice”

Although there is a wide ranging spectrum of balancing styles from person to person, I really think anyone is capable of achieving even the most impossible looking arrangements. The ONLY way I have gotten to my current skill level is through nearly obsessive practice, for seemingly no logical reason…. my goal was never really to get to somewhere in the future.  Almost in a way, it was more to neutralize thoughts of the future, past, or whatever.. I simply LOVED balancing. It turned into my happy place and main focus outside of work. And very naturally, through constructing 100+ gardens, my skill has gradually grown, though pictures make it seem like all of the sudden.

Assuming the love is there… just DO IT. Don’t have a certain goal in mind. just play. and then before you know it, skill and style develop naturally as well..

The garden in these picture was built in August of 2009. basically my first full summer of balancing… none of the individual balances here are incredibly technical. But their collective presence is VERY strong. Much stronger than any one individual… They are simply a result of getting lost for a day in the creek.  When the sun went down, this is what i saw… :)

DOCTOR’S PRESCRIPTION:

Do this from scratch 30 times and you will be amazed at the development of your meditative awareness, balancing skills, and maybe even overall happiness..  ;)

Exquisite! I would love to lie down in the stream and listen to them sing to the rhythm of the gurgle and whoosh. Thank you so much for sharing your obsession!

  2. There’s a place up Boynton Canyon in Sedona Arizona, a field and seasonal creek-bed that everyone contributes by building their own rock-vortex. It reminds me of this! It is beautiful and powerful. Thank you.

  3. I exclaimed, ‘He’s nuts! He’s obsessed. Look at this!’ My husband walked in and said,’Mirrors!’ Thank you for your posts. (you know my comments were in jest)
