Garden Chronicles: Day 3

Frozen Sunrise

“Look deep, deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” ~ Albert Einstein

Something awesome about land art is that it is always subject to the elements.. It constantly evolves or devolves depending on when it is given back to the hands of weather, night, day, sun, snow, wind, everything.

Visiting a garden at sunrise will always give a fresh perspective.. unlike afternoons, the sun will be coming from a nearly opposite angle, and will often reveal colors in different ways..  Something I did not expect when I began splashing water on the rocks, was the air being cold enough to promptly freeze the water to the rocks.. within seconds the water became ice, and the more water I splashed, the thicker the ice grew.  Seeing ice all over rocks in balance gives a strange contrast of elements.. the combination implies an extended process… much time and patience is wrapped up into the present…

“the past INSIDE the present” – BOC

Something extremely peaceful about the ice is that it seemingly stops time…especially juxtaposed with the presence of flowing water. It’s damn cold.  But well worth it with the appropriate gear (gloves/waders/winter clothes)..

The magic part about the sun rising is the way the light filters through the tree canopy and lights up various balances, briefly, while continuing the flux.. I just sat and clicked photo after photo, which can now be animated into a sunrise timelapse. :)  Here is one of my favorite moments with the combination of balances being lit up simultaneously.. More MAGIC :)

Sunrise Day 3

Thawed Sunset

After sunrise I left the garden with faith that it might stay intact while I was away. To my further amazement, everything was fine when I returned later in the day.. so I developed the garden even more off to the left. This was also a crucial point when I decided LARGE rocks could be balanced in the distant background to compliment the immediate garden.. As you might see in the following picture, there are two small dark points in the distant background… the first of many rocks that will be added in the following days…
