Diary of a Rock Balancer ::

Stone Balance Art created and photographed by Michael Grab — 19 May 2016 — Istria, Croatia ::

Sunset, high tide, and surprise lightning storm . .

All this stone balancing silliness is quite serene and peaceful, most of the time, and granted, that is a huge aspect of the experience I enjoy sharing with the world. But at the end of the day, I realize i’m always dancing WITH nature, and therefore submit to the fact that I’m never in complete control, nor do i want to be. This is part of the adrenaline and thrill of what i do, and often an unseen but highly enriching dimension to this practice — Adapting and learning to thrive outside my comfort zone — through the raw unpredictability, full throttle, sometimes terrifying experiences I sometimes find myself in.

For example, this storm last night caught me surprised and exposed to fairly heavy lightning for about 30 minutes, approaching high tide, at sunset. Huge energy at a crossroads of 3 peaking, uncontrollable rhythms. Luckily i reached zero as rising tide began crashing into my base rocks — followed by frantic camera work under darkening clouds, running around like a madman — followed by fear, adrenaline, and illogical courage at the realization of lightning and rolling thunder.. it was as if i could see and feel the electricity in the air around me.

Here I was anticipating a serene windless sunset amidst a strangely dramatic sky, but then moved to the point of weighing potential death?!? i considered my statistical advantage and kept shooting as if possessed, with full acceptance of the possibilities. buuuut i’m happy to report, i made it home in one piece!

    1. no filter at this point… usually during the day with full light i have a polarizer but at sunset and shooting anywhere toward the sun it’s next to useless.. but this time and place already had a lack of light so i needed every bit i could get! :)

  1. Thats really cool how you can feel the universe like talking to you. To be able to perceive the vibrations and work with these experiences. To me this is everyday life teaching me these lessons, but ive never really put it together until reading this. I guess I can relate to what your saying here. Very cool

  2. Is that the same top rock as in your broom flower picture? Amazing, as usual! BTW, be careful out there. You would be sorely missed if you got yourself hurt!
